THE LEGENDS
Water is addressed numerous times in Armenian religion and folklore, while many myths, traditions, rituals, and blessings originate from water.
Astghik, Armenians’ version of the Greek goddess Aphrodite far back in history was the deity of love and fertility, who later evolved into the goddess of love, maidenly beauty, as well as water sources and springs.
Astghik legend lives on and the famous Vartavar festival is still celebrated today in the Republic of Armenia, with Armenians sprinkling water on each other for good health and luck. It is also an act of magic, as the belief is that spraying each other will cause Astghik to allow rain to pour during the hot Armenian summers.
The legend behind RARE water is the belief held by the locals that the waters of the springs promote healthy pregnancy in brides. According to the legend, the mothers-in-law accompanied young women to the natural source, where the water’s magical properties will bless her with healthy children.
It is not a coincidence that water is mentioned in Armenian beliefs and folklore for many and many times.
